Terreiro do Paço/Praça do Comércio

Praça do Comércio, commonly known as Terreiro do Paço, is one of Lisbon’s most important civic and governmental spaces and has long served as a centre of public administration in Portugal. Rebuilt after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake on the site of the former Ribeira Royal Palace, the square is surrounded by monumental buildings that house several ministries and other government offices. Its strategic location facing the Tagus River has made it a symbolic gateway to the city and a prominent setting for official ceremonies, political events, and public gatherings. As a key administrative and institutional hub, the Terreiro do Paço reflects the historical continuity of the Portuguese state and its central role in the country’s political life.(Source: https://www.visitlisboa.com/en/places/praca-do-comercio-terreiro-do-paco)
