Eleftheria Square

Plateia Eleftherias (Eleftheria Square), located in the center of Nicosia, is the capital’s primary public space and a striking example of modern urban design. Historically known as Metaxas Square, it was renamed “Eleftheria” (Freedom) in 1974 and has since served as a symbolic point of unity for the divided capital, hosting major political rallies and cultural festivals. The square was dramatically redesigned by the renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, transforming it into a futuristic landmark defined by fluid curves and seamless connectivity. The structure features two distinct levels: an upper pedestrian bridge paved in granite that offers panoramic views of the historic Venetian Walls, and a lower level where the ancient dry moat has been converted into a tranquil urban park with promenades, water features, and gardens. This innovative design creates a “green belt” around the old city, effectively linking the historic walled center with the modern metropolis outside.
