The Spanish implementation of the Get Political project demonstrates how interactive, place-based and participatory methods can strengthen democratic competences and civic engagement across lifelong learning contexts.

Across Europe, adult educators play a key role in fostering democratic resilience, critical thinking and active citizenship. The Spanish implementation of the Erasmus+ Get Political project offers a transferable example of how experiential learning can strengthen civic competences through participation rather than passive instruction.

Although the activities were piloted with secondary school learners in the Municipality of Purchena, the project’s main contribution lies in its methodology. By combining non-formal education, collaborative learning and authentic institutional experiences, the programme developed an approach that can be readily adapted to adult education and community learning.

The programme began with the Get Political 101 Training Course, where participants explored democratic values through peer learning, guided discussions and collaborative activities. This was followed by a Political Peddy Paper, during which participants explored local governance and applied their knowledge in a simulated municipal council meeting. A socio-political tour then connected local history with democratic development through place-based learning, storytelling and discussions on civic responsibility and misinformation.

The programme concluded with a visit to the Spanish Senate in Madrid, where participants observed parliamentary debates, met political representatives and reflected on democratic institutions. A key lesson was that institutional visits become most effective when combined with structured preparation and guided reflection—an approach that adult educators can easily adapt through visits to local councils or public institutions.

Throughout the programme, the Get Political 101 Guide provided a common framework, supporting a gradual progression from local governance to national democratic institutions. Rather than focusing on memorising political facts, the methodology encouraged observation, discussion and critical reflection.

The project highlighted several lessons relevant for adult learning professionals. Experiential methods such as simulations, institutional visits and place-based learning increased engagement, while guided reflection helped consolidate learning and strengthen democratic competences. The combination of authentic experiences with structured educational materials created an effective bridge between theory and practice.

The Spanish experience demonstrates that these methods are transferable beyond their original context. By combining collaborative learning, historical reflection and direct engagement with democratic institutions, the Get Political project offers practical inspiration for adult educators seeking to strengthen civic participation and democratic literacy through experiential learning.

Experiential civic education offers valuable approaches for adult learning professionals.
