The GET Political project (No. 101183575), funded by the Erasmus+ KA3 programme \u2018Support for Policy Development and Cooperation \u2013 European Youth Together (2021\u20132027)\u2019, brings together several European partner organisations around a common objective: to strengthen young people\u2019s active political participation through non-formal education. The Foyer Rural CEPAGE, a rural community centre based in Puget-Th\u00e9niers in the Alpes-Maritimes, is one of the partners in this transnational consortium. As part of this initiative, it organised \u2018political discussion workshops\u2019 with groups of young people in several municipalities in the Haut-Var and the Pays de la Roudoule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A pol\u00edtica nas zonas rurais: um tema tabu?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Two sessions took place in January and February 2025 in Guillaumes and Puget-Th\u00e9niers. In total, around ten young people aged between 15 and 27 took part \u2014 French nationals, but also young people from Armenia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Hungary and Chechnya. This geographical and cultural diversity greatly enriched the discussions. The political discussion workshops follow a non-formal education methodology structured in several stages: an introductory phase using open-ended questions, an exploration of political and electoral systems, and a creative reflection in which the young people devise alternatives based on their own experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n O que disseram os jovens<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n O valor das oficinas de debate pol\u00edtico reside na liberdade de express\u00e3o que proporcionam. \u00c0 pergunta \u2018Como descreverias a pol\u00edtica numa \u00fanica palavra?\u2019, as respostas foram t\u00e3o variadas quanto reveladoras: caos, manipula\u00e7\u00e3o, propaganda, responsabilidade, desigualdade, viol\u00eancia leg\u00edtima. Estas palavras refletem uma verdadeira desconfian\u00e7a em rela\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0s institui\u00e7\u00f5es, mas tamb\u00e9m uma consci\u00eancia pol\u00edtica muito mais apurada do que se poderia imaginar num contexto rural isolado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When asked which politicians they recognised, the participants named Trump, Macron, Marine Le Pen, Viktor Orb\u00e1n, Ramzan Kadyrov \u2014 and their village mayor. This juxtaposition of the very global and the very local says a great deal about how these young people perceive power. The question \u2018Do you think leaders care about young people your age?\u2019 received an almost unanimously negative response. \u2018They never come to see us. They don\u2019t speak to us in our language.\u2019 Another participant pointed out that around 70 per cent of French people believe their government does not meet citizens\u2019 expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No entanto, n\u00e3o falta criatividade pol\u00edtica a estes jovens. Entre as suas propostas para um mundo melhor est\u00e3o: combater a corrup\u00e7\u00e3o, abolir fronteiras, baixar a idade de voto, realizar mais referendos, consagrar o direito ao aborto na Constitui\u00e7\u00e3o, e tomar medidas urgentes em mat\u00e9ria de ambiente. Algumas destas propostas est\u00e3o diretamente ligadas a debates parlamentares da atualidade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These same young people have continued to be involved in the project, which has enabled them, thanks to European funding, to visit various local, regional and national institutions in France and in Athens, Greece. As a result, many of the negative perceptions of politics have shifted thanks to the European Union\u2019s direct involvement in the participants\u2019 non-formal education. Many felt a sense of responsibility to make a real impact through politics and to get involved in their communities, whether formally or informally. Thus, the strength of this project lies not only in its ability to get to the heart of the matter when working with these particularly vulnerable groups, but also in its ability to bring about a genuine shift in the thinking of young people in rural areas, with a view to encouraging them to become actively involved in politics at all levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Educa\u00e7\u00e3o atrav\u00e9s do debate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Political discussion workshops embody a learning approach that formal education often struggles to replicate: starting from young people\u2019s own perspectives, challenging them with open-ended questions, and allowing them to form their own views. The facilitator does not simply impart fixed knowledge \u2014 they create a space for collective reflection.
