The Senate of Spain
The Senate of Spain (Senado de España) is the upper house of Spain’s national parliament, known as the Cortes Generales. It represents Spain’s territories and works alongside the lower house, the Congress of Deputies, to create and approve laws.
Senators are chosen through a mix of direct elections and appointments by Spain’s regional parliaments. The Senate reviews legislation passed by the Congress, can propose amendments, and has a special role in matters involving Spain’s autonomous communities. However, the Congress of Deputies generally has more political power in the legislative process.
